Art & Design
Imagining and creating through the eyes of an artist.
At Haddon, we believe that every child is a unique artist, with talents that can be nurtured and flourished. We have crafted an art curriculum that provides all children to have plentiful opportunities to embark on their own artistic journey. Our curriculum strives to develop our children's confidence, skills and talents to empower them to create aspirational, authentic artwork where they trust their ideas and express themselves.
Key strands in our art curriculum include using colour, pattern, texture, line, form, space and shape; sculpting; using sketchbooks; and analysing and evaluating.
Further to this, our WEAVE curriculum principles underpin the foundations of our art curriculum with the children experiencing the wider world through the planned content, experiences and connections with artists and visits to local areas to observe art first-hand. In addition, hands-on exploration of media and materials is offered whilst opportunities are built in for the children to apply their learning to an authentic outcome of a whole school art gallery. Career aspirations are discussed with children, enabling them to see the value of the subject. The art curriculum is vocabulary-rich, with topic-specific words supporting them to speak like artists. Opportunities are built in for the children to be exposed to a variety of artists from around the world.
Aims of the Art Curriculum:
Our art curriculum aims for pupils to:
- view art as a creative process: gaining knowledge from experts, exploring new ideas and using a range of materials
- produce creative work, exploring, recording and documenting their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using artistic language and vocabulary
- grow in confidence, develop resilience and become opinion-formers
- know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Art Key Knowledge Progression Document
Across our school, we have art enquiries which run during our summer term; however, we make connections through other subjects throughout the year, allowing children to make connections with their new learning and reactivating previous knowledge. This ensures that there is a full coverage of the National Curriculum, with progressive content being taught (some more ambitious than the National Curriculum) from Nursery to Year 6. This has been planned out using the Flying High Trust Key Knowledge Progression Documentation to formulate the enquiries for each year.
