Geography
Exploring our world, how it works, and our impact on it
At Haddon, we believe that every child is a geographer, with talents that can be nurtured and flourished. We have created a geography-rich curriculum that provides all children to have plentiful opportunities to embark on their own journey of understanding the world we live in. Our curriculum strives to develop our children's confidence, skills and talents to empower them to ask questions, explore and problem solve about the world in which they live.
Further to this, our WEAVE curriculum principles underpin the foundations of our geography curriculum with the children experiencing the wider world through the planned content, experiences and connections, with visits to relevant geographical locations. Career aspirations are discussed with children, enabling them to see the value of the subject. The geography curriculum is vocabulary-rich, with topic-specific words supporting them to speak like geographers. Opportunities are built in for the children to be exposed to different communities around the world.
Aims of the Geography Curriculum
Our geography curriculum aims for pupils to:
- view geography as a study of the land, features, inhabitants and phenomena of the Earth.
- make sense of their world.
- be curious and fascinated about the world in which they live.
- recognise that places are changing and understand why.
- recognise different places across the world are connected and how.
Geography Key Knowledge Progression Document
Across our school, we have geography enquiries which run during our spring term; however, we make connections through other subjects throughout the year, allowing children to make connections with their new learning and reactivating previous knowledge. This ensures that there is a full coverage of the National Curriculum, with progressive content being taught (some more ambitious than the National Curriculum) from Nursery to Year 6. This has been planned out using the Flying High Trust Key Knowledge Progression Documentation to formulate the enquiries for each year.
